Provenance

Where it came from

Spineless Thug was released as part of the Seventh Edition core set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Originally debuting in the Mercadian Masques expansion, this creature card represents the game's shift toward core set reprints that bridge different narrative arcs, serving as a functional black creature that explores themes of cowardice and fragility within the game's mechanics.

The card features an illustration by Pete Venters, a prolific artist known for his significant contributions to the game's early visual identity. Venters designed the character to evoke a sense of pathetic insecurity, utilizing a stark, character-focused composition that highlights the creature's literal lack of a spine, aligning the visual aesthetic with the card's mechanical downside of being unable to block.
