Spineless Thug

Spineless Thug was originally printed in the Tenth Edition base set of Magic: The Gathering, released in July 2007. As a core set, Tenth Edition served as a bridge for players, featuring a curated selection of cards from previous expansions to maintain a stable environment for gameplay. This specific card represents the black mana color identity, characterized by mechanics that often trade long-term stability for immediate power or aggressive board presence.

The illustration for the card was created by artist Carl Critchlow, whose work is well-recognized throughout the game's history for a distinct, often dark aesthetic. Critchlow leaned into the card’s thematic identity of a creature defined by its lack of moral fortitude, utilizing sharp lines and ominous lighting to convey the creature's sinister nature. Upon release, the card was received as a functional, low-cost utility creature, serving as a staple in limited formats where efficient aggressive options are valued.
