Provenance

Where it came from

Spire Tracer was released in 2013 as part of the Gatecrash expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Ravnica, the card represents the Gruul Clans, a faction defined by their wild, anti-civilization philosophy. Mechanically, it was designed as a low-cost, aggressive creature to support the limited play environment, utilizing the bloodrush mechanic which allowed players to discard the card from their hand to buff an attacking creature.

The artwork was commissioned from Christopher Moeller, a veteran illustrator known for his dynamic, painterly style. Moeller aimed to capture the kinetic, chaotic energy of the Gruul by depicting a scout navigating the urban spires of Ravnica with animalistic grace. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, if modest, inclusion for aggressive green decks, celebrated primarily for its role in enabling fast-paced gameplay during draft and sealed formats.
