Provenance

Where it came from

Assemble the Legion was released in 2013 as part of the Gatecrash expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Ravnica, the card was designed to represent the Boros Legion, a militaristic guild characterized by its philosophy of law and order maintained through overwhelming force. Mechanically, the enchantment mirrors the guild's signature mechanic, Battalion, by slowly amassing a growing army of soldiers that reflect the relentless, accumulating pressure of a organized military force.

The artwork was commissioned from Eric Deschamps, a prolific illustrator known for his dynamic and clear visual style. Deschamps aimed to capture the scale and discipline of the Boros forces, focusing on a sea of identical, armored soldiers marching in unison. Upon its release, the card became a notable staple in Limited and casual Commander formats, praised by players for its ability to dominate long games if left unchecked on the battlefield.
