Where it came from
Spirit of Resilience was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander set. This cycle of cards was designed to support the multi-color identity mechanics central to the five colleges of the Strixhaven magical university. The card is specifically associated with the Witherbloom college, which focuses on the intersection of life and death, utilizing green and black mana to emphasize themes of growth and decay.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a lush, verdant aesthetic to represent the essence of resilience through nature. The design seeks to bridge the gap between abstract spirits and the visceral, botanical decay often found in Witherbloom lore. Upon its release, it was received as a functional tool for Commander players focused on graveyard recursion and creature-based synergy, valued for its ability to protect the board state.
