Where it came from
Spirit of Resistance was released in 2000 as part of the Invasion expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set marked a significant narrative turning point for the game, depicting a multiversal war against the biomechanical Phyrexians. As a card, it was designed to reward players for controlling a diverse array of colors on the battlefield, serving as a powerful defensive tool that reflected the theme of coalition and unity against a singular, overwhelming threat.
The card features illustration by artist Rob Alexander, a prolific contributor to the game's early aesthetic. Alexander utilized his signature painterly style to depict the ethereal, protective energy of the resistance forces, aiming to capture a sense of hope amidst the backdrop of the invasion. Within the competitive meta-game, it is remembered as a niche but effective high-cost enchantment, appreciated by collectors for its role in the Invasion block's thematic emphasis on multicolored strategies.
