Spit Flame

Spit Flame was released in 2021 as part of the Forgotten Realms Commander set, a thematic expansion for Magic: The Gathering that integrated the lore and aesthetic of Dungeons & Dragons into the card game. The card was designed to capture the visceral experience of a dragon's breath weapon, utilizing a mechanic that allows the player to deal damage to a creature, with a reduced cost if a dragon card is revealed from the hand. This release was part of a larger collaborative effort between Wizards of the Coast and the Dungeons & Dragons brand, aimed at bridging the gap between two of their most significant intellectual properties.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Chris Rahn, known for his dynamic and highly atmospheric work within the game. Rahn aimed to convey the immediate, intense heat of a dragon’s fire, focusing on color saturation and aggressive composition to distinguish the instant from standard spell cards. Upon release, the card was received as a flavorful, albeit situational, removal option, particularly valued by players focusing on dragon-tribal deck builds who could consistently trigger the card's reduced mana cost.
