Where it came from
Spiteful Squad was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set centers on the prestigious Strixhaven University, an institution for magical learning located on the plane of Arcavios, where each of the five colleges focuses on a specific two-color philosophical pairing. This card represents the Witherbloom college, which specializes in the study of biology and the essence of life and death, utilizing both black and green mana to manipulate the natural cycle.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized the set's signature aesthetic to depict the grim, swamp-dwelling nature of Witherbloom students. The design focuses on the 'mentor' mechanic, reflecting the cooperative and often morbid spirit of the college. Upon its release, the card was integrated into Limited and Commander formats, where its ability to buff creatures upon death was noted for its utility in graveyard-focused strategies.
