Where it came from
The Team Pennant artifact card was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Strixhaven: School of Mages, a thematic expansion centered on a prestigious multiversal university for mages. Within the game's lore, the card represents the spirited paraphernalia used by students to support their respective colleges during the intense magical competitions and academic rivalries that define life at the institution. It is designed as an equipment card, mechanically reflecting the collaborative and boost-oriented nature of the campus activities featured in the set.
The card's illustration was crafted to evoke the classic, collegiate aesthetic found in traditional academic environments, reimagined through the lens of high fantasy. The artist focused on capturing the vibrant colors and symbolic heraldry associated with the university's diverse student bodies, aiming to ground the fantastical setting in a recognizable, nostalgic school atmosphere. Upon its release, it was noted by players as a functional utility piece that reinforced the set's focus on teamwork and internal school pride.
