Where it came from
The Sporeback Troll was released in May 2006 as part of the Dissension set, the third and final installment of the Ravnica: City of Guilds block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It represents the Golgari Swarm, a guild defined by its mastery over life, death, and decomposition. The card was designed to highlight the graft mechanic, a key gameplay feature of the set that allowed creatures to distribute +1/+1 counters to others entering the battlefield, effectively turning the troll into a central support piece for green-aligned decks.
The illustration for the card was created by artist Christopher Rush, a legendary figure in the game's history known for his iconic work on the original Black Lotus. Rush sought to capture the grotesque, fungal nature of the Golgari aesthetic, depicting the troll as a hulking, moss-covered entity tethered to the cycle of decay. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by players for its synergy within Limited formats, where its ability to regenerate while bolstering the rest of the board provided significant utility in extended games.
