What it does

At the beginning of your upkeep, you may put a fungus counter on target nontoken creature.

Whenever a creature with a fungus counter on it dies, create a 1/1 green Saproling creature token for each fungus counter on that creature.

When this enchantment leaves the battlefield, remove all fungus counters from all creatures.

Provenance

Where it came from

Sporogenesis was released in 1998 as part of the Urza's Saga expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a core set in the Urza block, it was designed to push the boundaries of enchantment-based gameplay and narrative world-building, focusing on the mechanical theme of growth and infestation. It reflects the set's broader intent to introduce more complex, graveyard-interactive mechanics that defined the late-nineties competitive landscape.

The card was illustrated by Heather Hudson, a prolific artist for the franchise during that era. Her work for Sporogenesis aimed to depict the grotesque, biological spreading of fungal spores within the game's high-fantasy setting. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche utility tool, primarily noted for its thematic contribution to the set's darker, more visceral aesthetic rather than its dominance in competitive tournament play.
