What it does

Whenever a creature enters, destroy all other creatures that share a color with it. They can't be regenerated.

The cruelest strain of plague keeps its hosts alive long enough to return home and infect their families.

Provenance

Where it came from

Spreading Plague was released in 2000 as part of the Invasion expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast during a period when the game was exploring themes of planar convergence and multi-colored mechanics, the card was designed as a thematic representation of the Phyrexian invasion force attempting to corrupt and assimilate the inhabitants of the plane of Dominaria.

The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, whose work often captures the grim and visceral aesthetic associated with the Phyrexian faction. His design utilizes a dark, organic palette to convey the spread of biological decay, a visual choice that complements the card's mechanical function of punishing players for casting colored spells. Upon its release, it became a notable, if niche, inclusion in Commander and casual formats for its ability to drastically disrupt game states through color-based board control.
