Squall, SeeD Mercenary // Squall, SeeD Mercenary

The Final Fantasy Art Series was commissioned as a commemorative celebration of the franchise's legacy, intended to highlight the evolution of iconic characters from early pixel-based sprites to high-fidelity modern digital art. This specific card, number 47, focuses on Squall Leonhart as he appears in Final Fantasy VIII, capturing his reserved demeanor and his signature gunblade. It was created to provide collectors with a curated look at the character design aesthetics that defined the late 1990s era of Square Enix's development.

The illustration emphasizes the sharp, melancholic aesthetic envisioned by Tetsuya Nomura, who sought to blend a modern military influence with the traditional high-fantasy elements of the series. The art direction leans heavily into the stark, cool color palette associated with the Balamb Garden setting. Upon its release, the card was well received for its faithfulness to the original character concept, often noted by fans for how effectively it encapsulates the stoic personality that distinguishes Squall within the pantheon of Final Fantasy protagonists.
