Where it came from
Square Up was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to represent the academic and magical dueling culture of Strixhaven University, specifically aligning with the Prismari college, which emphasizes the intersection of performance art and elemental magic. Mechanically, it serves as a pump spell that reflects the set's focus on instant and sorcery spells, encouraging players to embody the theme of students preparing for a magical confrontation.
The illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. His design choices for this card emphasize the dynamic, kinetic energy associated with Prismari magic, utilizing bold visual effects to capture the moment of spellcasting. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional tool for Limited play formats, where its ability to boost creatures based on spell mastery resonated with the set's intended mechanical identity.
