Square Up

Square Up was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It represents the Silverquill college, one of the five magical institutions on the plane of Strixhaven, which focuses on the intersection of white and black mana. The card is designed to mechanically embody the college's emphasis on rhetoric and social standing, granting a creature a power boost based on its toughness as if it were correcting a mistake or leveling the playing field.

The artwork was commissioned from Manuel Castañón, who captured the sharp, ink-based aesthetic central to the Silverquill visual identity. Castañón utilized the dramatic contrast characteristic of the set to emphasize the magical writing and fluid, shadowy calligraphy that defines the students of the institution. Within the game, the card is classified as a common, serving as a functional tool for Limited play environments where its ability to manipulate combat statistics provides utility to players during tense exchanges.
