Where it came from
Squelching Leeches was released in 2016 as part of the Duel Decks: Nissa vs. Ob Nixilis expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These decks were designed to be played against one another, representing a thematic battle between the Planeswalker Nissa Revane and the demon Ob Nixilis. The set serves to highlight the mechanical clash between Nissa's green-aligned nature magic and Ob Nixilis's black-aligned power-seeking corruption.
The card features illustration by Johann Bodin, who opted for a visceral, swamp-toned aesthetic to emphasize the creature's parasitic nature. As a card that scales in power based on the number of Swamps a player controls, it functions as a thematic representation of the desolate, plague-ridden environment of the plane of Zendikar. It was received by players as a functional utility creature that anchored the deck's reliance on black mana.
