Where it came from
Squirrel Sanctuary was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the long-standing fan-favorite archetype of squirrel-themed tribal decks, which had previously lacked a dedicated, high-impact enchantment to bridge the gap between casual and competitive play. Its inclusion in a set primarily aimed at Modern format players signaled Wizards of the Coast's willingness to lean into lighthearted, flavorful designs that resonate deeply with the community.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a lush, vibrant aesthetic to capture the whimsical essence of a woodland retreat. Voss intended to evoke a sense of protection and harmony, mirroring the card's mechanical function of buffing squirrel creatures whenever they enter the battlefield. Upon its debut, the card was warmly received by collectors and players alike, particularly those who appreciate the intersection of cohesive mechanical synergy and whimsical, top-down thematic world-building.
