Where it came from
The Squirrel Sanctuary card from the Modern Horizons 2 Art Series was released in 2021 as part of a dedicated subset designed to highlight the illustrative talent behind the Magic: The Gathering card game. This series was created to offer collectors high-quality, frame-free versions of set artwork, printed on heavy cardstock to mimic the texture of traditional art prints. It emerged during a period when Wizards of the Coast was placing a heightened emphasis on the collectibility of card aesthetics beyond functional gameplay utility.
The artwork for this piece was created by illustrator Randy Gallegos, a long-time contributor to the game. The piece is characterized by a whimsical, pastoral aesthetic that celebrates the 'Squirrel' creature type, a long-standing fan favorite within the Magic community. By stripping away the text boxes and card borders, the series allows the viewer to focus on Gallegos's use of light and composition, emphasizing the creature's thematic connection to nature and communal gathering.
