Where it came from
The Squirrel Sovereign art card belongs to the Modern Horizons 2 Art Series, a subset released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021. This set was designed to showcase the intricate illustrations found within the main expansion, providing collectors with high-quality, borderless prints of the game's creature and spell artwork. The series serves as a tribute to the artists who define the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering, offering a format that strips away game mechanics to highlight the painterly craft behind the cards.
The illustration for Squirrel Sovereign was created by artist Jesper Ejsing. Known for his whimsical and highly detailed fantasy aesthetic, Ejsing was tasked with depicting a monarch of the squirrel kin, emphasizing a regal yet playful stature fitting for the card's theme. The design draws on the long-standing community affection for squirrel tribal decks, translating a traditionally humorous concept into a character that feels both authoritative and integrated into the broader lore of the plane.
