Where it came from
The Squirrel Sovereign was released in 2024 as part of the Bloomburrow Commander set, a collection themed around a whimsical, anthropomorphic forest setting inspired by fairy tales and high-fantasy literature. Designed by Wizards of the Coast for Magic: The Gathering, the card reflects the set's focus on tribal synergies, specifically elevating the squirrel creature type, which has long been a cult favorite among players for its humorous and swarm-based playstyle.
The card’s illustration features a regal, armor-clad squirrel, capturing the lighthearted yet heroic tone of the Bloomburrow aesthetic. It was developed to provide a powerful lord-style effect for squirrel-focused decks, and upon release, it was well-received by the player base for both its functional utility in Commander games and its thematic cohesion with the set’s established visual narrative.
