Where it came from
Stack of Paperwork was released as part of the Mystery Booster: Convention Edition playtest cards in 2021. This set was designed by Wizards of the Coast to mimic the chaotic, experimental environment of internal R&D design phases, featuring cards that were never intended for official tournament play. The design process focused on 'outside-the-box' mechanics that pushed the boundaries of Magic: The Gathering rules, often utilizing humor or meta-commentary as central features.
The card was illustrated by David Sladek, who leaned into the mundane, bureaucratic aesthetic implied by the title. The card functions as a satirical take on the administrative bloat sometimes associated with card games, forcing players to track an ever-increasing number of items. It was received by the community as a quintessential 'playtest' novelty, prized by players for its subversive design and its role in the whimsical, unpolished nature of the Mystery Booster experience.
