Where it came from
Smelt // Herd // Saw is a unique playtest card released as part of the 2021 Mystery Booster convention edition. These cards were designed by Wizards of the Coast developers as experimental, high-concept designs that explored mechanics and design spaces not traditionally found in standard Magic: The Gathering sets. They were inserted into Mystery Booster packs as a surprise for players at conventions, intended to provide a whimsical and unpredictable drafting experience.
The card features an 'augment' or 'split' style design that showcases the playful experimentation typical of the playtest series. The design team utilized these cards to iterate on unconventional mechanics, often prioritizing novelty and community engagement over strict tournament legality. As unofficial test prints, they were received by the community as coveted collector's items, valued more for their rarity and insight into the game's development process than for competitive utility.
