Staff of the Death Magus

The Staff of the Death Magus was released in July 2013 as part of the Magic 2014 (M14) core set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It belongs to a cycle of five artifact staves, each aligned with a specific color of mana, designed to provide incremental life gain when a player casts a spell of that color. The cycle was intended to provide accessible, beginner-friendly utility for Limited play environments, reinforcing the core mechanical identities associated with each color's flavor.

The card features illustration by Kev Walker, a prolific artist in the Magic: The Gathering community whose work spans decades of the game's history. Walker utilized his signature dark, atmospheric style to capture the necromantic essence of black mana, depicting a gnarled, shadowy staff that visually communicates the card's function of drawing power from the cycle of death. While the card saw limited competitive play, it remains a recognizable example of the aesthetic design language that defined the mid-2010s core sets.
