Provenance

Where it came from

Standing Troops was included in the Eighth Edition core set of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, released in 2003. This set was a significant milestone for Wizards of the Coast, as it marked the first time the game featured a new modern frame design, intended to make the cards more visually accessible and distinct from the classic aesthetic that had defined the game for a decade.

The artwork for this specific printing was created by artist Christopher Rush, a legendary figure in the game's early history known for his iconic contribution to the Black Lotus. His illustration for Standing Troops depicts a regiment of soldiers in a grounded, functional style that emphasizes the military discipline thematic to the card's ability to block multiple attackers. The piece was well-received by players for its classic fantasy sensibility during a period of transition for the game's overall visual language.
