Provenance

Where it came from

The Bog Wraith first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the classic swamp-dwelling undead creature archetype foundational to the game's black mana color pie. It was designed to function as a middle-tier threat, providing players with an evasive creature that could bypass defensive lines in swamp-heavy environments. The version included in Eighth Edition features the updated card frame introduced in 2003, which aimed to modernize the game's aesthetic and improve readability while maintaining the traditional high-fantasy style that defined the set's transition into the 'Modern' era of competitive play.

The illustration for the Eighth Edition printing was rendered by artist Greg Staples. Moving away from the grittier, sometimes abstract styles of the early 90s, Staples provided a more detailed and cinematic representation of the wraith, emphasizing a looming, spectral presence amidst murky waters. This iteration was received as a faithful update to a legacy card, bridging the gap for long-time players while aligning with the more polished art direction Wizards of the Coast established for the base set series during the early 2000s.
