Provenance

Where it came from

Stangg was released in 1994 as part of the Legends expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was notable for introducing the concept of legendary creatures, each intended to represent a unique individual within the game's evolving lore, and was the first expansion to be designed by players rather than Wizards of the Coast internal staff. The card depicts a barbarian warrior from the Dominarian continent of Corondor, accompanied by his magically created twin, Stangg-Twin.

The card's illustration was created by artist Dan Frazier, whose distinctive, painterly style helped define the aesthetic of early Magic sets. Frazier sought to emphasize the dual nature of the character, visually reinforcing the card's mechanics which generate a token creature upon play. Upon release, Stangg was received as a curious tactical piece due to its high mana cost and the inherent fragility of its twin, becoming a point of interest for collectors focusing on the origins of the legendary creature subtype.
