Provenance

Where it came from

Stangg originally debuted in the 1994 Magic: The Gathering expansion Legends. Designed by Robin Herbert and illustrated by Melissa A. Benson, the card depicts a legendary fighter who creates an identical twin token upon entering the battlefield. This mechanic was a creative reflection of the character’s lore in the Multiverse, where Stangg is a warrior whose internal essence is so intense that it manifests as a physical duplicate.

The version from 'The List'—a rotating selection of reprinted cards included in Set Boosters—retains the original artwork by Benson. While the card is often cited by players for its whimsical and unusual play mechanics, it remains a beloved relic of the game's early design era, where thematic storytelling frequently took precedence over streamlined competitive utility. It serves as a nostalgic touchstone for long-time collectors who appreciate the distinct aesthetic of 1990s fantasy illustration.
