Starnheim Unleashed // Starnheim Unleashed

Starnheim Unleashed was originally released as part of the Kaldheim set in 2021, drawing inspiration from Norse mythology and the frigid, high-stakes aesthetic of the plane of Kaldheim. This specific card from the Art Series features an oversized format that showcases the illustration in full, stripped of traditional card game text to highlight the visual storytelling. The design team sought to capture the ethereal and militaristic essence of the Valkyries and their heavenly realm, Starnheim, emphasizing themes of honor and celestial warfare.

The artwork for this piece was crafted by Johannes Voss, a long-standing contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Voss opted for a high-contrast palette that balances the stark, icy blues of the sky with the radiant gold of the angelic figures. Upon its release, the Kaldheim Art Series was received warmly by collectors who appreciated the shift toward art-forward presentation, as it allowed the intricate brushwork and composition to be examined without the clutter of gameplay mechanics.
