Where it came from
Start Your Engines! // Max Speed is a double-faced token card introduced in the Aetherdrift expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were designed to represent the unique vehicular racing mechanics of the set, specifically facilitating the 'Drive' keyword. The art direction emphasizes high-octane kinetic energy, utilizing bold lines and a saturated color palette to convey the fast-paced nature of the card's intended gameplay effect.
The card was developed by the Wizards of the Coast design team as part of a thematic push into speed-focused, aggressive playstyles. The illustration, created by an in-house artist, captures the aesthetic of futuristic, high-velocity transit. Upon release, the token was well-received by players for its clear visual language, which helps maintain board state clarity during the complex race-themed encounters that define the Aetherdrift set.
