Provenance

Where it came from

Starved Rusalka was released in the 2006 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Guildpact, the second set in the Ravnica block. It represents the Golgari Swarm, one of the ten guilds of the city-plane Ravnica, which focuses on the cycle of life and death through the graveyard. The card was designed to provide a low-cost utility creature, reflecting the Golgari philosophy of sacrificing disposable resources to fuel growth or gain life.

The illustration was created by artist Daren Bader, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering. Bader’s work for this piece highlights the grim, subterranean aesthetic of the Golgari guild, depicting the Rusalka as a spectral, haunting figure rising from the rot. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its efficiency in decks that utilized sacrificial mechanics, becoming a notable inclusion in various graveyard-focused strategies of the era.
