What it does

As long as this artifact is untapped, players can't untap more than two permanents during their untap steps.

The warriors fought against the paralyzing waves until even their thoughts froze in place.

Provenance

Where it came from

Static Orb was originally printed in the Urza's Destiny expansion in 1999, designed to challenge players by restricting the untapping of permanents. The specific version found in the 2001 World Championship Decks was part of a limited release intended to commemorate the top decks from the Magic: The Gathering World Championship event held that year. These decks were packaged as gold-bordered, non-tournament legal cards that allowed players to experience and play with the exact deck lists used by the world's best competitors.

The art for the original card was created by Brom, a fantasy illustrator known for his gothic and surreal style. For the Static Orb, he sought to evoke a sense of oppressive stasis, depicting a jagged, mysterious object that exerts a freezing influence on its surroundings. While the card's mechanics were often viewed as frustrating due to the tactical lock it placed on gameplay, it remains a notable example of the high-utility artifacts that defined late 90s competitive strategy.
