Where it came from
Steadfast Guard was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set depicted the plane of Mercadia, a world defined by its complex mercantile culture and intricate political schemes. Mechanically, the card was designed to support the 'white weenie' archetype, emphasizing the color's thematic focus on creature defense and teamwork through its vigilance-adjacent ability.
The artwork was created by fantasy illustrator DiTerlizzi, a prolific contributor to the game during the late 1990s. His depiction of the guard focuses on a stylized, armored figure that reflects the slightly whimsical yet grounded aesthetic he brought to the Mercadian setting. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, low-cost utility piece that served to stabilize boards in limited gameplay environments.
