Steamflogger Boss

Steamflogger Boss was released in 2007 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Future Sight. It gained notoriety primarily because it introduced the 'Contraption' subtype, a mechanic that had no functional rules at the time of the card's printing. Its design, illustrated by Warren Mahy, leans into the eccentric, industrial aesthetic common to the set’s exploration of potential future timelines within the game's multiverse.

The card was received by the player community as a deliberate, humorous mystery. For over a decade, it served as an inside joke and a point of speculation regarding whether Wizards of the Coast would ever provide the mechanical support required to make the card functional. It was not until the 2017 Unstable set that the Contraption mechanics were finally fully realized, retroactively validating the existence of the Boss as a functional piece of Magic lore.
