Steamflogger Boss

Steamflogger Boss first appeared in the 2007 Unstable-adjacent set Unhinged, though its official debut as a functional card came with the release of Unstable. It was designed by Mark Rosewater as a meta-joke, specifically referencing the card 'Steamflogger of the Odious' mentioned in earlier Wizards of the Coast flavor text. The card introduced the 'Contraption' mechanic, which was initially intended as a humorous, unplayable concept but was later fully codified into the game's rules for subsequent silver-bordered sets.

The card features artwork by Kev Walker, who leaned into the steampunk aesthetic by depicting a grimy, industrial overseer presiding over complex machinery. Upon its release, it became a cult favorite among players who appreciated the long-term payoff of a decade-old inside joke. While technically illegal for standard tournament play due to its silver-bordered nature, it remains a significant piece of Magic: The Gathering lore for its role in bridging the gap between comedic flavor text and actual mechanical implementation.
