Steelclad Spirit

Steelclad Spirit was originally released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and was later reprinted as part of the 2022 Innistrad: Double Feature collection. This unique set was designed to commemorate the return to the gothic horror plane of Innistrad, intentionally combining cards from both the Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow expansions into a cohesive draft environment. The set is noted for its distinctive monochromatic, silver-screen-inspired art style, which sought to evoke the aesthetic of classic 1930s horror films.

The visual direction for the Double Feature printings, including this card, was overseen by Wizards of the Coast to create a unified, high-contrast look that distinguishes these versions from their original color counterparts. The design process involved applying a specific grayscale filter to the existing card art, effectively reimagining the contemporary digital illustrations within the framework of traditional cinema. Upon its release, the set received a mixed reception from the player base, with many appreciating the bold stylistic experiment while others critiquing the overall readability and texture of the black-and-white card frames.
