Where it came from
The Steelburr Champion was released as part of the Bloomburrow Commander set in 2024, designed to complement the main set's anthropomorphic woodland aesthetic. It belongs to a specialized cycle of cards intended to bridge the gap between traditional Magic: The Gathering mechanics and the cozy, pastoral fantasy theme of the plane of Bloomburrow, where small creatures take on larger-than-life roles in a world without humans.
The card features artwork that emphasizes the rustic, makeshift equipment characteristic of the Bloomburrow setting. The design team focused on creating a card that feels both tactile and artisanal, reflecting the resourcefulness of the set's inhabitants. Upon release, it was well-received by players focusing on equipment-based strategies and those who enjoy the flavor-rich storytelling inherent to modern Commander expansion decks.
