Where it came from
Step Between Worlds was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Outlaws of Thunder Junction. The set draws heavy inspiration from classic Western tropes reimagined through a high-fantasy lens, centering on a plane known for its lawlessness and frontier spirit. This particular card represents the chaotic, multiversal shifts that define the narrative stakes of the set, illustrating the volatile nature of the Omenpaths that connect the game's various worlds.
The artwork, rendered by artist Tuan Tran Chu, captures the ethereal and fractured transition between realms. The design choice leans into the surrealist aesthetic often found in contemporary fantasy illustration, emphasizing movement and disorientation to match the card's mechanical effect. Upon its release, the card was analyzed by the community for its strategic implications in competitive formats, where its unique ability to force players to discard and redraw their hands was noted for its high-risk, high-reward nature.
