Where it came from
Step Right Up was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity expansion, a set designed by Wizards of the Coast to blend the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering with a whimsical, carnival-inspired aesthetic. The card reflects the set's focus on attractions and games of chance, offering players a way to interact with the unique 'Attraction' mechanic introduced in this set. Its design, handled by the Magic R&D team, aims to capture the playful tension of a midway prize game while maintaining the technical structure of a standard trading card.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Titus Lunter, who utilized a vibrant, high-contrast palette to evoke the nostalgic atmosphere of a vintage space-themed amusement park. The illustration captures the visual language of classic fairground signage, intending to immerse players in the overarching science-fiction carnival theme that defines the Unfinity expansion. Upon release, the card was received as a flavorful utility piece for players interested in the set's specific mechanics, frequently noted for its ability to generate resource advantage within the context of the game's broader, less formal rules environment.
