Where it came from
Stern Constable was released in 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad set for Magic: The Gathering. The card reflects the set's thematic return to the gothic horror plane of Innistrad, which was then suffering under the corrupting influence of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul. Mechanically, the card serves as a low-cost utility creature, embodying the desperate efforts of human town guards to maintain order in a world descending into madness.
The artwork, illustrated by Greg Staples, captures the grim aesthetic characteristic of the plane. Staples focused on the visual language of the state-sanctioned defenders, utilizing a muted, atmospheric palette that emphasizes the heavy, weathered equipment of the Constable. The design was intended to fit within the set's focus on human fragility, and it was received as a functional, if modest, inclusion in the draft environment of the era.
