Where it came from
Stern Dismissal was released in early 2020 as part of the Theros Beyond Death expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set returned players to the plane of Theros, a world deeply inspired by Greek mythology, focusing on themes of the afterlife, gods, and the boundary between the living and the dead. The card represents a common-rarity instant spell intended to provide blue-aligned decks with a versatile tool for board interaction, specifically allowing players to return creatures or enchantments to their owners' hands.
The card's visual design was crafted by illustrator Igor Kieryluk, whose work frequently appears in the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Kieryluk sought to capture the high-fantasy aesthetic of the setting, depicting a forceful display of aquatic magic consistent with the blue mana color identity. While common cards of this nature are primarily functional tools for limited play formats, Stern Dismissal is remembered by players for its efficiency in handling the enchantment-heavy threats that defined the Theros Beyond Death competitive environment.
