Provenance

Where it came from

Stinkweed Imp was released in 2005 as part of the Ravnica: City of Guilds expansion, the first set in a block centered on the color-coded guilds of the city-plane Ravnica. The card was designed to represent the Golgari Swarm, a guild defined by its mastery of death, decay, and the recycling of organic matter. Its mechanics, specifically the keyword 'dredge', were introduced to embody the cyclical nature of the Golgari, allowing players to pull the card from their graveyard back into their hand at the cost of milling their library.

The art for the Stinkweed Imp was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who sought to capture the grotesque and organic aesthetic synonymous with the Golgari aesthetic. The creature is depicted as a rotting, winged entity emerging from the urban grime of the city. Upon release, the card became a staple in various constructed formats, as its low mana cost combined with its powerful defensive abilities and graveyard synergy made it a defining element of Golgari-themed decks for years to come.
