Provenance

Where it came from

Stinkweed Imp originally appeared in the 2005 Ravnica: City of Guilds expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a card belonging to the Golgari Swarm, it was designed to embody the guild's signature mechanic, dredge, which allows a player to return the card from their graveyard to their hand by milling cards from the top of their library. This unique interaction turned what is typically a disadvantage—placing cards into the graveyard—into a powerful engine for resource management.

The version from the 2009 Duel Decks: Divine vs. Demonic set features the original illustration by Luca Zontini. Zontini’s art captures the grotesque, swamp-dwelling nature of the imp, fitting the dark, decay-focused aesthetic of the Golgari. The card has remained a staple in various formats, particularly within graveyard-centric strategies, and its inclusion in the Duel Decks series was intended to provide players with a functional, thematic tool for the 'Demonic' side of the conflict.
