What it does
Hexproof
Lieutenant — As long as you control your commander, this creature gets +2/+2 and has "Whenever this creature becomes blocked, you may draw two cards."
Most see krakens as wantonly violent, failing to notice their meticulous attention to detail when dismantling a vessel.

Where it came from
Stormsurge Kraken was released as part of the Commander 2014 set, a collection of five preconstructed decks designed specifically for the Magic: The Gathering Commander format. The set was conceived to introduce new cards with mechanics tailored to multiplayer gameplay, prioritizing high-mana costs and impactful, board-altering abilities. Kraken cards have historically occupied a niche in the game as powerful, late-game threats that reward players for engaging in the social and political dynamics characteristic of Commander.
The artwork for this card was provided by Dave Kendall, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Kendall is known for his atmospheric and creature-focused illustrations, and for this design, he focused on a classic, terrifying leviathan silhouette emerging from deep water. The card was well-received by players for its ability to draw cards when an opponent attacks the player's teammates or fellow table rivals, making it a functional and thematic centerpiece for blue-aligned decks.
