What it does
Hexproof
Lieutenant — As long as you control your commander, this creature gets +2/+2 and has "Whenever this creature becomes blocked, you may draw two cards."
Most see krakens as wantonly violent, failing to notice their meticulous attention to detail when dismantling a vessel.

Where it came from
Stormsurge Kraken was introduced in the Commander Masters set, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2023. This set was specifically designed to highlight powerful cards and popular archetypes within the Commander format, a multiplayer variant of Magic: The Gathering. The Kraken serves as a high-mana value threat that rewards players for engaging in the social and political dynamics central to the format, specifically by allowing the controller to draw cards whenever an opponent targets it.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Caio Monteiro, who leaned into a dynamic, scale-heavy aesthetic to emphasize the creature's immense power and aquatic menace. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional staple for blue-aligned Commander decks that prioritize defensive card advantage. Its design reflects the modern design philosophy of Commander Masters, which aims to provide players with impactful, flavor-forward creatures that facilitate interactive gameplay.
