Stormtide Leviathan

Stormtide Leviathan was introduced in the Magic 2015 core set, serving as a high-mana blue creature designed to act as a board-stabilizing control piece. The card draws upon the long-standing tradition of 'Leviathan' creatures in Magic: The Gathering, which are historically characterized by massive power and toughness balanced by prohibitive casting costs and restrictive maintenance requirements. This version was engineered for the mid-2010s play environment, emphasizing a lockdown effect that turns the board into an island-locked state, forcing players to reckon with the sheer scale of the creature.

The illustration was crafted by artist Nils Hamm, whose work is noted for its ethereal, atmospheric approach to fantasy creatures. Hamm’s design centers on the colossal, semi-translucent form of the leviathan rising from the depths, prioritizing a sense of overwhelming oceanic scale over aggressive posture. Upon its release, the card was received as a quintessential 'timmy' card—a design focused on epic, game-altering impact—finding its most consistent home in casual commander formats and limited environments where its ability to halt combat effectively defines the flow of the game.
