Where it came from
The Stranglehold Judge Gift card was released in 2022 as part of the official Magic: The Gathering Judge Program reward series. These cards are distributed to certified judges as a token of appreciation for their work in officiating tournaments and fostering community standards. The card features unique, premium foil treatments designed to distinguish them from standard-set versions, making them highly sought after by players and enthusiasts who value the prestige associated with the judge community.
The artwork for this particular printing was commissioned to reflect the card's theme of oppressive, restrictive control. Designed to align with the aesthetic standards of high-end promotional cards, the illustration utilizes a stylized, dramatic composition consistent with modern Magic art direction. Upon its release, it was well-received by the player base for its utility in the Commander format and its status as a tangible marker of a judge's dedication to the game.
