Where it came from
Training Grounds was originally released in the 2010 expansion Rise of the Eldrazi. The card was designed to support creature-heavy strategies by reducing the activation costs of activated abilities, a mechanic that quickly found a home in various competitive and casual formats. Its utility and niche power level made it a highly sought-after staple for players interested in complex board states.
This specific iteration, part of the 2022 Judge Gift Card program, features updated artwork by Ryan Alexander Lee. The program is designed to reward dedicated tournament judges for their contributions to the Magic: The Gathering community, providing them with exclusive, foil versions of notable cards. Lee's illustration maintains the card's thematic focus on elemental training while providing a refined, modern aesthetic that distinguishes this version from the original printing.
