Provenance

Where it came from

Strength in Numbers was originally released in the 2003 expansion set Legions, a set uniquely comprised entirely of creature cards, with the exception of specific cycles that interacted with the creature-heavy theme. As a combat trick within the white color identity, it was designed to provide a flexible defensive or offensive boost based on the number of creatures a player controlled, reflecting the set's focus on swarm mechanics and tribal synergy.

The card features artwork by Ron Spencer, a veteran illustrator whose distinctive, high-contrast style defined much of the visual identity of early Magic: The Gathering. His interpretation of the card captures the theme of collective power through visceral, jagged linework that emphasizes the sudden mobilization of an army. While it has been reprinted in various iterations, including its inclusion in The List, it remains a recognized example of the functional, reliable instant-speed effects that characterized mid-era set design.
