Where it came from
Unbounded Potential was originally released in the Modern Horizons 2 expansion in 2021 as part of a cycle of cards designed to support the proliferate mechanic. The card was conceived as a versatile tool for both limited environments and casual constructed formats, allowing players to bolster their creatures and planeswalkers by adding loyalty or +1/+1 counters. Its design leans into the thematic focus of Modern Horizons 2, which sought to bring mechanically dense and complex cards into the Modern format.
The card features artwork by Anna Steinbauer, who is well-regarded in the Magic: The Gathering community for her soft, atmospheric illustrative style. The visual design emphasizes the concept of magical growth and arcane energy, aligning with the card's function of expanding potential. Upon its inclusion in 'The List'—a curated selection of cards from throughout the game's history that appear in Set Boosters—it gained broader visibility among collectors who appreciate the card's utility and its distinct place in the evolving meta-game of the early 2020s.
