Stromgald Crusader

Stromgald Crusader was released in 2006 as part of the Coldsnap expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was uniquely positioned as a 'lost' third expansion to the 1995 Ice Age block, designed to evoke the high-fantasy, arctic themes of the original series while introducing new mechanics like cumulative upkeep. It was intended to bridge a decade-long thematic gap, providing players with cards that felt retroactively connected to the mid-nineties aesthetic.

The card features artwork by Volkan Baga, whose work during this era often leaned into high-contrast, atmospheric fantasy styles. In this design, he focused on the imposing, armored silhouette of a knight from the dark, cold-aligned Stromgald sect. It was received as a strong, efficient creature for black-aligned decks, particularly noted for its protection from white, which made it a formidable threat in the competitive metagame of the time.
