Provenance

Where it came from

Stronghold Assassin was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the second set in the Rath Cycle, Stronghold was designed to flesh out the lore of the plane of Rath and introduce mechanics centered on graveyard interaction and aggressive creature strategies, reflecting the darker, more industrial themes of the Phyrexian-dominated setting.

The card features artwork by Mike Dringenberg, a legendary comic book illustrator best known for his influential work on The Sandman series. Dringenberg brought a distinctive, gothic sensibility to the illustration, aiming to capture the shadowy, lethal nature of the assassin. Upon release, the card became a staple in black-aligned decks for its ability to destroy creatures cheaply, remaining a recognized piece of 1990s Magic history for its efficiency and aesthetic alignment with the set's grim atmosphere.
